Note For Anyone Writing About Me

Guide to Writing About Me

I am an Autistic person, not a person with autism. I am also not Aspergers. The diagnosis isn't even in the DSM anymore, and yes, I agree with the consolidation of all autistic spectrum stuff under one umbrella. I have other issues with the DSM.

I don't like Autism Speaks. I'm Disabled, not differently abled, and I am an Autistic activist. Self-advocate is true, but incomplete.

Let The Grown-ups Talk

I am never the one you ask.
When I answer, you ignore.
"Let the grown-ups talk, honey."
Rarely in so many words, but I see it.
In the eyes that won't meet mine, I see it.
(It's so much easier to look at eyes that aren't looking back at mine!)
In the words you say over mine, I hear it.
Autism means forever-child to you.
And you're wrong.
I am a grown-up.
Just like you, I turned 18.
Just like you, I tasted freedom.
Just like you, I decided my own path.
Just like you, I am an adult.
"Let the grown-ups talk, honey."
What did you think I was doing?
